REGULATIONS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS IN 2026

1. Study Permit and Basic Conditions
International students must have a valid study permit and be enrolled as full-time students at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) to maintain their legal status and work/study rights in Canada.

2. Working While Studying
Students with a study permit can work up to 24 hours per week off-campus during regular academic sessions.
They may work full-time during scheduled breaks (for example, summer or holidays).
This 24-hour weekly limit is permanent for 2026 and replaces the previous 20-hour rule.

3. Changing Institutions
If you decide to change your educational institution, you must apply for and obtain a new study permit before starting at the new DLI.

4. Financial Requirements (Proof of Funds)
Since September 2025, study permit applicants must demonstrate that they have sufficient funds to cover:

  • Tuition fees
  • Living expenses (a minimum of approximately CA$22,895 for a single student)

This amount may vary depending on circumstances and whether accompanying family members are included.

5. Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) — Work After Graduation

Eligibility
International students may apply for a PGWP after completing a full academic program at a DLI.
For 2026, the list of eligible fields of study for the PGWP has been frozen, meaning there will be no changes during the year.

Important:
If your program starts before the update deadline and was eligible, you can still apply even if rules change afterward.

6. Language Requirements for PGWP
In some non-university programs, minimum language requirements may apply, although this can vary depending on the category and type of diploma.

Context and Processing
Canada has reduced the number of study permits issued, adjusting intake limits for 2025–2026 as part of its immigration plan.
Processing times for study permits may vary and, although they have improved in some categories, delays still exist.

7. Additional Important Information
Eligibility to work full-time before graduation is only allowed under specific circumstances, usually after completing a program or when certain conditions are met.
